Illustration & visualisation
It was a love of cartoon illustration that most inspired Roger Quinn to pursue a career in art and design, and it remains one of his favourite genres. Whilst seen by some as a lower art form, cartoon illustration is a deceptively powerful visual communication tool that can disperse with formality and cut right to the heart of a matter. Whilst he embraces digital illustration techniques, Roger's traditional pencils, pens and brushes are never far away…
The word caricature literally means a 'loaded portrait'. In his caricature illustration, Roger works in a variety of styles and media to create such loaded portraits of familiar and sometimes not so familiar individuals. Whether taking a satirical or light hearted approach, Roger's caricatures have been commissioned for national advertising campaigns through to modest retirement celebrations.
Even to an informed audience, technical information can be complex. Similarly, concepts or products yet to be realised can be difficult to describe in words alone. A well considered illustration can help to clarify, illuminate and simplify such information. Working in a variety of 2d and 3d digital and traditional media, Roger enjoys the challenge of disseminating complex information, visualising theoretical ideas, and rendering them in a form that are most relevant and accessible to the specific audience.
Earlier in his career, Roger spent several years producing architectural renderings, by hand, for architectural and construction clientele. Computer technology ultimately superseded these hand rendering skills, and whilst he has fully embraced the newer technologies in his current work, Roger believes the discipline in honing the traditional hand skills has better helped to inform his current practice and teaching.
